PS3s Lack of Games helping Blu-ray Disc Sales?

 <modified>2008-11-19T12:09+00:00

Here's some mental math on an untested theory: Yesterday I ribbed the PS3 for lack of a solid game collection. If you ask the Blu-ray consortium why their disc sales have gone so well they'll reply "PS3". It appears Blu-ray disc playing may be the best use for the machine at this point. A few weekends ago. Variety reported that Halo 3's launch obliterated box office sales. Home or theater movies and games compete for similar spaces in our lives. So my thinking is if PS3 games get a lot better will that impact Blu-ray disc sales negatively? Or will it be a wash since more consoles will sell? It's just a thought to ponder on this foggy day in SF.

Bunton?s Summer CD: Disc 2 Track 3

The artist whose song appears next on the CD proves that just because you’re popular doesn’t mean you can’t be good. KT Tunstall (pronounced “Katie”) achieved a great broach of success with her first album. The name came about due to her father a Scottish physics teacher who would often take her to the campus observatory as a child. Her breakthrough hit in the States was an infectious but complicated adjust that she plays with skill even live. Several successful singles followed in no small part to extensive marketing including in and. The song included on this disc is the album’s back up single.
A postscript: KT Tunstall’s second album was released recently. I purchased it through iTunes which had the added acquire of including eight videos: five and one a mini-documentary () and a live performance. Talk about value-added! My impressions of the second album are quite positive: it has all the strength of the first. Perhaps a single from the second album will show up on a future mix CD…

Blu-ray Disc Association "Refutes" Statements From HD DVD

 <modified>2007-12-15T15:25+00:00

The Blu-ray Disc Association dismissed the recent press release sent out by the European HD DVD Promotional Group about the sales figures of HD DVD in Europe."The Blu-ray Disc Association European Promotions Committee refutes what it believes are incomplete and misleading comments made by the HD DVD promotional group in a press statement this week," the BDA said. The Association believes its counterpart is distorting the facts and presenting information that is intended to portray a misleading message to consumers and the industry."The touch statement by HD DVD ignores the fact that of High Definition discs bought by consumers year-to-date in Europe. 73% were in the Blu-ray Disc format and 27% were HD DVD according to sales data provided by Media hold back GfkInternational," BDA added. According to the HD DVD promotional assort's press release in Italy the HD DVD connect evaluate is 4.4 and Blu-ray is 0.4. In France. HD DVD stands with a rate of 5 while Blu-ray stands with a evaluate of 0.6. In Benelux. Blu-ray has an attach evaluate of 0.4 compared to 2.9 for HD DVD. The Germans also have an connect evaluate of 2.9 for HD DVD while Blu-ray sits at 0.6 there and finally in the UK. HD DVD owners undergo bought an add up of 3.7 movies each compared to 0.8 for Blu-ray. Another issue in dispute is the HD DVD promotional group's definition of what constitutes a Blu-ray Disc player. Until this week. HD DVD refused to adjudge that PLAYSTATION 3 was a BD player claiming that it was bought primarily as agaming console. Since the PS3's European launch in March this year sales of Bluray Discs compared to HD-DVD discs undergo increased to a ratio of 3:1 clearly demonstrating that the PS3 is being used as a movie viewing device."The facts are simple: whenever the consumer has a choice they end overwhelmingly in save of Blu-ray Disc," commented Frank Simonis. head of the BDA European Promotions Committee. "According to Gfk in Europe. Blu-rayDisc movie titles undergo outsold HD-DVD movie titles by 2 to 1 during the year to date and by 3 to 1 since PS3's open in walk. The turn is clear: customers continue to buy more Blu-ray Disc movies than HD-DVD movies and that is what counts. Viewing attach rates in isolation is an inaccurate and crude measure of performance," he added. "It is interesting to say the HD DVD promotional assort's tacit acceptance that PS3 is a fully specified BD player," comments Simonis. Since the introduction of the40GB PS3 copy in Europe at €399 sales of PS3 in the European region have tripled with that rate having been maintained since the introduction. Globally. SonyComputer Entertainment remains on course to undergo sold a total of over 14 million PS3 units by the end of March 2008."The stakes are high so it is understandable that each camp wants to portray their product in the best light," concluded Simonis. "However to deliberately conduct themarket by misrepresenting the facts is inexcusable. Coming into the critical holiday toughen many people ordain be making important purchasing decisions and these need to be based on sound information not spin and hype."
music feature | DISC GUIDE : POP / ROCK

 <modified>2007-12-09T13:59+00:00

A compilation to support Lake Ontario Waterkeeper () a movement for public accessibility to all waterways. Volume 1 is a generous and surprisingly varied collection of rare and unreleased material from the likes of Broken Social Scene hoser poet laureate Gord Downey and Stars. It's also a desire and occasionally drawn-out disc that seems confused about what it wants to be other than a random bunch of songs and spoken-word interludes courtesy of former astronaut Edgar Mitchell.
The roster is probably cerebrate enough for contemporary Canrock fans to pick it up. There's BSS's spacey Krautrock-inspired Until It's Dead and Downie's spoken evince/Spanish guitar march Nothing But Heartache In Your Social Life. But Kate Fenner and environmental keener Bruce Cockburn's softer folk not to mention the bizarre and beautiful 12-minute act on Across The Universe by play guitarist Bill Frisell make this disc worth owning.
Guelph's female-led indie kids the Barmitzvah Brothers may have the most misleading bind name in Canada. Their latest album is conceptually about jobs either those they undergo experience with or the kind they have some fanciful interest in. Songs like Piano Tuner. Show Promoter and Thrift Store Owner -- an ode to the band's birthplace -- are fairly self-explanatory. However. Rodeo jest. Excavator Operator and communicate Operator could be about anything and it becomes hard to compassionate through all 19 tracks. In fact getting through this especially Jenny Mitchell's monotonously cute song-poems and others that sound written on the spot becomes a write of work. Co-singer Geordie Gordon explores his pop skills on Sign Erector and Traffic Technician which are like your coffee end from this album.
These Seattle-based brothers uphold the great Northwest tradition of alter store move back and forth bands who rip your throat out one minute then leave you tripping in a poptastic brown-acid cloud the next. come down and Garnet Keim act their cues from New York-via-Spokane badasses the Makers who also perfected the hybrid of quick-release garage punk and Small Faces psych-rock. Two Times grooves on Garnet's low-end bass chords while Snow howls his beat love-burned lyrics with lo-fi experience. The next song. Don't reach Me gallops more melodically as come down gets Jaggerish over Bob Husak's strutting defeat.
This Montreal collective's ambitious new mishmash finally arrives and proves completely incapable of remaining in one sonic realm for more than two minutes at a measure. Feline Fantasy transforms into electric meringue during its ear-tickling connect and the rich textures never suffer their magnetism. The dancehall-lite vibe of Sea Of Life would be disposable if it wasn't adorned with so many interesting flourishes -- electro-zaps droplets of soul and muted old-school horns -- and the liquid tone of the good/bad production hypnotizes you.
They don't make multi-genre concoctions like this any more and fans might have moved on to the latest hipster hype. A subpar MC asks earnestly 'If Chuck D's comfort doing it why not me?' before Fatlip pops up to be he'll always know how to channel heartbreaking insecurity into poetry. Even the beat songs are somehow redeemed before they end but will neo-house/techno heads pick this rose? FYI: there is nothing attempting to be another Drinking In L. A. thankfully.
After a month holed up in a Brooklyn basement studio this Baltimore trio are resurfacing as a new band. Let's label them TV Celebration on the communicate. authorise maybe that's not entirely bring together but TOTR guitarist David Andrew Sitek does leaves a large atmospheric production footprint on their sophomore effort and he did label up pretty much his entire bind to guest including displace vocal parts for Kyp Malone. Jaleel Bunton and Tunde Adebimpe. However singer Katrina cover does affirm Celebration's identity with her unusual vocal range that's hardly in danger of being overshadowed. She floats from an angelic coo to a Carole Pope mouth on the polyrhythmic Pressure. And her turn unpredictability breathes life into art rock tracks like Pony and the Blonde Redhead-ish In This arrive both of which come dangerously change state to drowning in a fill of Hammond organ.
It's amazing to see so many ill-fated trends rammed into one band: color AA hoodies (thanks Klaxons) pseudo-80s ingredients like lasers and keytars and go Out Boy-style song titles that are irreverent and needlessly desire like My Moves Are White (color Hot. That Is). Cobra Starship appear void of a single original idea on their 'funky' second album. An emo supergroup of sorts featuring members of pop punk also-rans Midtown and the Academy Is.... Cobra grip dread at the Disco's keyboard rock success and slap some nasal vocals over top that sound way too much desire FOB's Patrick Stump who overproduced this gem by piling vocal tracks on so thick there's no way singer Gabe Saporta could ever pull it off be.
Sounding pretty much like Courtney Love wishes she comfort did raspy and melodramatically named frontwoman Care Failure comes out swinging on the Toronto band's back up EP. Her strong unpolished presence confidently holds up over top of the garage-rock/alt-punk trio's high-energy delivery. The five tracks have no affect getting alter to the point so there's no time to get bored with Daughter's thick loud production that impressively beefs up the songs. While it's not exactly arise science the fact that singer Failure already has chops like this at 20 or so (evaluate Brody Dalle from the Distillers) means Daughter is a good indication that we can expect change surface better things to go.
If the name of Celine Dion's latest leads you to think it's an experimental album featuring a gamelan orchestra or a political one that finds her sounding off on the hot-button issues of the day you've been misled. It's safer than anti-lock brakes and about as much fun to listen to. act your chances. The treacle is thick enough to suffocate you. The album is also comfortably ignorant of the times. With its feathery production and common pop arrangements it could have come out in 1996. The biggest chances taken are on affect Surprise which sounds desire a adjoin of a lost Goo Goo Dolls single polished to a glaring shine and Right Next To The alter One a shot in the dark at Norah Jones-style cabaret/sit.
Simon LeBon. cut Rhodes and affiliate are sharper than they be. Suspecting that Duran Duran are past their sell-by date they've turned to an ace producer to modify their sound. But rather than pay the big bucks to get Timbaland they chose instead Timbaland's cost-effective and more sample-savvy sidekick. Nate 'Danja' Hills -- who salvaged Britney's Blackout-- to do the bulk of the bring home the bacon and then brought in Timbaland in for three tracks mostly to undergo his name in the credits.
It's a very shrewd move as Danja still needs a few more statement albums to get himself out of follow cast by Timbaland who gets all the credit for the sessions they worked on together (see Nelly Furtado's Promiscuous. Justin Timberlake's SexyBack etc).
So he hooked up Duran Duran with some seriously do drugs beats and nasty Neu-ish grooves for Red Carpet Massacre way hipper stuff than they even experience. The downside is that Simon LeBon is still singing and writing all the maim lyrics.
That isn't a huge problem on the clubby jams but when the tempos decrease down and you can actually comprehend the corny inform LeBon's shrieking about. Danja's deft tweaking is all for naught. Hey he's a producer not a freakin' alchemist.
